I visited Mat Happy Yoga last week to photograph their studio, staff and fun yoga moves. This style of photography is known as branding photography. Do you have a hard time knowing what to post on social media? Are you in need of professional, yet fun photos of what you offer your customers? Do you need updated head shots of you and your staff? That’s why I offer personal branding sessions for small businesses right here in Columbus! My branding sessions are relaxed, fun and have a lifestyle feel to them.
Right off the bat I loved that Mat Happy Yoga was easy to find! They’re located right on Cemetery Road in Hilliard. Their studio-front looks clean, inviting and sleek. When I walked in I was kindly greeted by the co-owner, Kelly. We talked about her vision of what type of photos they needed for their website. I also talked with the other co-owner, Kelly’s sister Rhiannon. Rhiannon covers all social media posts so we talked about what kind of photos they usually share online.
We started off their session with individual portraits of the instructors and fun yoga poses of each instructor. I also photographed the studio itself and the goodies they sell. They performed a mock class and I photographed their amazing yoga poses. Then we ended with some fun group portraits of the whole team! I had so much fun learning about their business and spending time with this fun group of women!
I sat down with Kelly and Rhiannon to talk a little bit about their business. Here is a little Q&A from our time together.
Can you tell me a little bit about Mat Happy Yoga?
Opened in our hometown in 2014, we’re a local, sister-owned yoga studio designed as a second home or “happy place” for our clients to gather, cultivate relationships, and feel better.
What made you want to open a yoga studio?
A shared passion for well-being, love of yoga and desire to create something big was too strong to ignore. As kids, we always wanted to run a business together. It began as a dance studio, and evolved over the years to a yoga studio. Our professional backgrounds are very different, allowing us foster one another’s strengths, develop ideas and each bring something special to the table.
Do you offer beginner classes for someone less familiar with yoga, such as myself?
As the first yoga studio in our community, it was important for us to offer an ongoing series for beginners. We know how intimidating it can be to walk into a studio as a newbie, and work hard to ensure everyone feels comfortable. We often joke that we overdo the “welcome wagon” and perhaps need to take it down a notch! Our five-week beginner essentials series is an introduction to the basic foundations of yoga with each week building upon the previous to create an understanding of the poses and transitions, mindfulness, breath work and yoga philosophy. Upon completion of the series, students feel prepared and confident to join other group classes. Aside from the series, we offer several beginner friendly classes.
Do you find this to be a good workout for those looking to lose some weight?
Yoga is a life changing practice. Many people initially come to yoga for the physical aspect, and quickly find it encompasses much more. It doesn’t matter what brings you to your mat; rather what you find, which is often a better version of yourself.
Does Mat Happy Yoga have any goals for the next year?
We have some expansion plans in the works involving more offerings while staying in the Hilliard area along with exciting new workshops and special events.
